It's an easy gig - low risk, big pay out. Just deliver a blue suitcase to a trucker named Cowboy at a lonely little spot called Baker, out in the desert near Vegas. Hand over the suitcase, get twenty-seven thousand cold, hard dollars in return. For struggling, street-bound 30-something actor John Person (Jon Favreau) it's like a solid gold gift from God. But when he arrives in Baker, he discovers the Cowboy (Sean Bean) is missing-in-action, local vixen Ruthie (Rachael Leigh Cook) and her mother Stella (Daryl Hannah) are inexplicably stirring up the paranoid, alien-obsessed locals against him and an FBI agent (Kelsey Grammar) wants to question him about a decapitated neighbour, hundreds of missing people and a conspiracy that might literally be out of this world!
