Überblick:
E' il 1939 e il mondo è sull'orlo della guerra con la Germania nazista. L'arrogante e presuntuoso alpinista austriaco Heinrich Harrer (Brad Pitt) organizza una spedizione per scalare una delle vette più impervie dell'Himalaya, il Nanga Parbat. Sopravissuti ad una tempesta di neve, Harrer e i suoi compagni di scalata vengono fatti prigionieri dai soldati inglesi e rinchiusi in un campo di concentramento in India. Nel frattempo, infatti, in Europa, è scoppiata la guerra, e loro, di nazionalità austriaca, sono considerati dei nemici. Dopo vari tentativi Harrer riesce a fuggire dal campo di prigionia insieme al compagno Peter Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis), con il quale raggiunge il Tibet da dove spera di aprirsi una via di fuga. Qui, nella Città proibita di Lhasa, scopre un mondo affascinante e stringe una profonda amicizia con un bambino che cambierà la sua vita, il piccolo DALAI LAMA...
